Yu Suzuki's latest arcade project is a racing title named Ferarri F355. It is assumed that this is a re-vamped Outrun style road racing game. Unfortunately, it may not be coming to the Dreamcast. The arcade unit will be the first to take advantage of the Naomi's scalability. The unit will consist of not one but four Naomi units linked together, essentially 4 times as powerful as the Dreamcast. This creates a severe inability for the DC to do a close to arcade perfect port of the game. What does this mean for future arcade ports? Has Sega shot themselves in the foot by allowing scalability in their arcade unit and losing all the potential arcade perfect ports? Not necessarily. Remember that Yu Suzuki typically has free hardware reign, and in the past arcade boards have been built around his game ideas, not vice versa. The cost of scaling up the Naomi boards is quite high and most companies will avoid this option if entirely possible. Yu Suzuki has free reign and gets from Sega what he asks for because he always brings in a winner. So while we may not get any kind of port of Ferarri F355, I think this kind of problem will be rare where the Naomi is concerned. |
